Development and Implementation of
Health and Safety Groups in Rural Manitoba

The MFL Occupational Health Centre (OHC) has been awarded a grant from the Workers Compensation Board's Community Initiatives and Research Program. The OHC's project is to help develop health and safety groups in rural Manitoba.

Health and Safety Groups

• The purpose is to develop and implement Health and Safety Groups in rural areas of Manitoba with an emphasis on health and safety programs and ergonomics. There is a need for rural workplaces to access resources, share information, develop best practises and to develop sustainable health and safety programs
• Participation is voluntary, however, there is a requirement to become involved and support the project in your local community and to participate in the sharing of information and resources.
• The OHC will facilitate the Health and Safety Groups, provide resources to those participating and provide training of the elements of a health and safety program through video conferencing and meeting with local communities.
• Benefits of participation include: the development and improvement of safety programs in your workplace, reduced injuries, WCB claims and related costs; the increased awareness, attention and cooperation involving health and safety in the communities where these health and safety groups are formed; and the increased compliance with current and proposed legislation that deals with musculoskeletal injuries and ergonomics.
